Fiona Ferro v Sorana-Mihaela  Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the second round of this same tournament four years ago, Cirstea winning easily in straight sets.

Ferro, Avenged St. Petersburg Defeat by Zvonareva

Having beaten the number two seed, Petra Martic of Croatia in the first round, Ferro found herself up against Vera Zvonareva, who had beaten her in the first round of the St. Petersburg Open only last month.

However, Ferro ensured there would be no repeat, with an ultimately comfortable win.

She set the match up early, breaking the Russian in her first service game, and although Zvonareva was briefly on level terms after breaking back, she dropped her own serve again in the next game and Ferro served out for the set.

Both players made a lot of unforced errors at the start of the second set, and four of the first five games went against serve. Crucially Ferro earned the one hold and, serving to stay in the match, Zvonareva gave up her serve for one final time.

Cirstea Looking to Regain Past Glories

It has been more than a decade since Cirstea won her only WTA title and reached a career high ranking of 21 in the world.

But she has shown flashes that some of that old form might be coming back again, reaching the third round of the US Open last year, and again at the Australian Olen in February, where she caused s surprise by knocking out Petra Kvitova, the world number ten.

The Romanian has had two good wins in straight sets in Istanbul so far this week.

First she beat Katryna Kozlova of Ukraine on Tuesday, and followed that up with victory over the Russian Anastasia Potapova, the world 76, in their second round encounter.

It was not a high quality match, full of dropped services and unforced errors. Potapova had  chance to serve for the first set, fluffed her lines and it went to a tie-break, which the Romanian finally won on her fourth set point.

Then, in the middle of the second set, five successive games went against serve. When that sequence finally came to an end, Cirstea had the chance to serve for the match, and this time she kept her nerve to do so.

Ferro v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Ferro has got good momentum going in this event now and will rate her chances of getting to the semi-final and perhaps beyond, with the bottom-side of the Istanbul draw now open. Cirstea may have beat Ferro in this tournament four years ago, but the Frenchwoman is a batter player these days.

Tip: Ferro to win: 1/2 (bet365)
