Despite the lack of points on offer, this low-profile competition usually attracts high-ranked players because of its close proximity to the Australian Open that is played weeks from it.
What adds to its charm is that the Auckland Open is the only WTA tennis tournament played in New Zealand allowing some of the Kiwi women players to participate in it. It’s played on outdoor hard court surfaces with the winner of the tournament to earn 280 points and a total prize money of $250,000.
2023 WTA Auckland Open Schedule & Dates
The WTA Auckland for 2023 will be one of the first tournaments for the women’s singles circuit with the competition beginning on January 2, 2023. It will go on till Sunday, January 9 when the final was played. The qualifying rounds were held two days before the start of the main draw.
The 2021 and 2022 editions of the Auckland Open had been cancelled because of the pandemic.

What Happened at the 2022 WTA Auckland Open?
The WTA Auckland Open wasn’t held in 2022 and 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Her first title since 2017, Serena Williams finally emerged victorious at the Auckland Open in 2020, the last time it was played before the pandemic hit. He had defeated Jessica Pegula in the final 6-3, 6-4.
Williams defeated Camilla Giorgi, Christina McHale and Laura Siegemund to reach the semi-finals of the tournament where she demolished Amanda Anisimova 6-1, 6-1 to take one step closer to getting her 73rd WTA title.
An impressive feat in itself, Williams also partnered up with Caroline Wozniacki and the duo managed to reach the finals of the doubles category but fell to the American duo of Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad 4-6, 4-6.
Wozniacki, in the singles category, had the chance of facing her close friend in the finals but was defeated by Pegula in the semi-finals who fought her from a set down.
With the former world no.1 chasing Margaret Court’s record, her promising form ahead of the Australian Open suggests that Williams may just win her 24th Grand Slam at Melbourne Park.
Julia Goerges became the third women’s singles player to successfully defend her title at the Auckland Open, as she defeated Bianca Andreescu in the final of the competition. She came back from a set down to clinch the title, after having defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the final in 2018.
Goerges, who was the second seed in the tournament, was a straight-set winner over Johanna Larsson and Mona Barthel in her first two rounds before getting stretched by Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinal where the final set went into a tie-breaker. Goerges then defeated Viktoria Kuzmova in the semifinal in straight sets again to make it to the title-decider.
Second seeded Caroline Wozniacki was knocked out in the second round while Venus Williams made it to the quarterfinal.
This was after Goerges had beaten Caroline Wozniacki in the final 6-4, 7-6 to clinch the 2018 title. In 2018, Wozniacki defeated American qualifier Sachia Vickery in straight sets in the first semi-final while Goerges was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Hsieh Su-wei in the other semi-final.
