What Happened at the 2022 Barcelona Open?
Carlos Alcaraz continued to show the kind of mettle he’s made of when he lifted the Barcelona Open title, his third of the season after he overcame Pablo Carreno Busta in the final. He won 6-3, 6-2.
Having come into the tournament as the fifth seed, Alcaraz had a first round bye before getting taken to three sets by Soon-won Kwon in the second.
An easy third round win over Jaume Munar followed soon after before he needed three sets to douse the top seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight. Alcaraz followed it up with another tough win over Alex de Minaur to reach the title-decider.
Carreno-Busta had earlier sent the second seeded Casper Ruud packing from the quarterfinal and then overcame Diego Schwartzman in the semis.
In 2021, after the previous edition of this tournament had been suspended, it was Rafael Nadal who lifted his 12th Barcelona Open title by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a hard-fought final. Nadal pipped Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-5 to add to his collection of clay court wins.
Nadal, the top seed coming into this competition, did have his moments of weakness and needed to get out of sticky situations in his wins over Ilya Ivashka in the second round and Kei Nishikori in the third.
This was followed by routs of Cameron Norrie and Pablo Carreno Busta before getting to the final.
The 2020 edition of the Barcelona Open was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Dominic Thiem emerged as a surprise winner at the 2019 Barcelona Open, stalling Rafael Nadal in his tracks – and in the semifinals – as he romped to straight-set wins throughout the tournament to lift the title. A 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nadal gave him one of his biggest wins of the tournament and he then went on to crush Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-0 in the title-decider.
Kei Nishikori, the fourth seed, was the other semifinalist but he went down to Medvedev in a sterling three-setter.
Among other seeded players, second seeded Alexander Zverev was knocked out in the second round, as was Karen Khachanov, while Stefanos Tsitsipas made it to only the third round.
This event in 2018 was attended by the likes of Nadal, Djokovic, Dimitrov, Goffin, Thiem, and other renowned players on the ATP Tour. The top 16 seeds enjoyed a bye into the second round.
Right off the bat, the likes of Djokovic, Kei Nishikori, and Diego Schwartzman lost in the second round. In the meantime, Nadal continued to dominate his bracket as usual. He fought his way through the likes of Roberto Carballes Baena, Guillermo Garcia Lopez, Martin Klizan, and David Goffin to reach the final.
Meanwhile, in his opposite half, a Greek storm in the form of Stefanos Tsitsipas was brewing on the horizon. He delivered one of the most scintillating performances of his career, bulldozing past Schwartzman, Thiem, and Carreno Busta to set up the final clash with Nadal.
Even though the young Greek ultimately lost to him in the final, he sent out a strong message to the rest of the players on the ATP Tour. That event marked the beginning of his on the circuit and he eventually moved on to become the force that he is right now.
