What Happened at the 2022 National Bank Open?
Pablo Carreno Busta had gone into the 2022 edition of the Canadian Open as an unseeded player but went the distance with it. The Spaniard won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 against Hubert Hurkacz in the final to lift the trophy.
In winning his first ever Masters 1000 title, Carreno Busta shocked Matteo Berrettini in the first round, overcame Holger Rune in the second, sent Jannik Sinner on his way in the third before defeating Jack Draper and Dan Evans to make it to the final.
All the top three seeds in the men’s singles tournament lost in the second round following an opening round bye.
The women’s singles title was won by Simona Halep, who was seeded 15th in the tournament as she overcame Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final.
Halep had a tough run through to the title-decider, with wins over Donna Vekic, Shuai Zhang, Jil Teichmann, Cori Gauff and Jessica Pegula punctuating her making it through to her match-up with Haddad Maia.
In the end, Halep carved over a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over her Brazilian opponent.
Camila Giorgi became the shock winner of the women’s singles title at the 2021 Canadian Open when she overcame the fourth seeded Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. This was after Pliskova had sent the top seeded Aryna Sabalenka packing while Giorgi defeated Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.
On the men’s side of things, it was Daniil Medvedev who coasted past Reilly Opelka to lift the Canadian Masters title for 2021.
Following the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal due to a foot injury, Medvedev had no trouble routing John Isner while Opelka edged past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals.
The 2020 Rogers Cup had to be cancelled after the tennis calendar got hit by the pandemic.
In 2019, defending champion Rafael Nadal added another Masters title to his repertoire as he took full advantage of the absence of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to win the competition dropping just one set. The women’s title was won by Bianca Andreescu, who took the confidence from this victory to go on to win the US Open later in the year.
Nadal started off with back to back straight-set wins over Dan Evans and Guido Pella after a first round bye but then dropped his first set to seventh seeded Fabio Fognini in the quarterfinals. Fognini had earlier beaten Nadal on clay en route his first ever Masters title but the Spaniard was having none of the repeat, as he clinched the next two to move into the semifinals.
There he got a walkover from Gael Monfils and he then crushed Daniil Medvedev in the final, dropping just three games in a one-sided affair.
Andreescu continued her golden run in the season, as she added another title to her name. What was even more special about this win was the manner in which she faced four successive three-set encounters, winning each of them in a fighting manner before crushing Sofia Kenin in straight sets in the semis.
In the final, Serena Williams had to retire from the match because of an injury giving the Canadian the title.
Earlier, Andreescu defeated Eugenie Bouchard, Daria Kasatkina, Kiki Bertens and Karolina Pliskova to get to the last four.
This was after Nadal and Halep won the respective, men’s and women’s singles titles at the 2018 Rogers Cup. While Nadal defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final in straight sets to clinch the victory, Halep’s win was a hard-fought three-setter against Sloane Stephens.
Halep started her campaign in this tournament with a tough win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova before going on a roll as she overcame Venus Williams, Carolina Garcia and Ash Barty in straight sets to make it to the final. Stephens, seeded number three, went one better by entering the final without dropping a set but then went down to Halep.
Nadal’s only loss of set came in the quarter-final against Marin Cilic with wins over Stan Wawrinka, Karen Khachanov and Tsitsipas punctuating his title win. Interestingly, Tsitsipas was an unseeded player in this tournament, taking out the second seeded defending champion Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final in three, gruelling sets.
