So much so, she entered the tournament on a protected ranking, and then defeated the likes of Ash Barty, Venus Williams and Madison Keys to end up a shock winner of the US Open. In 2018, she made it to the final of the French Open on a surface Stephens considers her favourite.
A hardcore baseliner, Stephens relies on her speed and movement to get the better of her opponents, and often has been able to turn things around in rallies because of that quality. With a strong forehand and a strong backhand to go with her athleticism, Stephens often gives a feeling of lazy elegance but has the ability to surprise her opponents as a result.
