Rafael Nadal v David Ferrer Head to Head

The two players have met 31 times on the ATP circuit with Nadal leading the head-to-head 25-6. Given the dominance Nadal has had against most players during his career, six victories by Ferrer is an impressive statistic.

Nadal Looking To Be More Convincing on Clay

The King of Clay Rafael Nadal started the clay season looking for unprecedented 12th title wins at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, Barcelona ATP 500 and the French Open.

A week and half later, Nadal has had a shock straight sets semi-final loss at Monte Carlo (which he refers to as his worst match on clay in 14 years), to Italy’s Fabio Fognini, as well as lost a set at Barcelona for the first time in four years after winning 30 consecutive sets.

For reasons that are not quite clear yet, Nadal has not looked close to his typically invincible self on clay. A close quarter-final at Monte Carlo against Guido Pella, was followed by a humiliating semi-final loss, and a three set opener in Barcelona against Argentine Leonardo Mayer. At the moment, this does not bode well for the grueling clay court season ahead for Nadal.

Nadal has thus far lost serve considerably more often than he would have coined as acceptable and failed to capitalize from positions of strength. He will be looking to put that behind and settle into a rhythm sooner rather than later.

Ferrer Looking to Sign Off in Style

Nadal’s opponent is none other than fellow countryman and old friend David Ferrer. Ferrer has announced his retirement and the Madrid Masters 1000 next moth is slated to be his last tournament. A gritty clay court specialist with commendable fighting spirit, he been ranked as high as number in the ATP rankings in 2013.

Despite being a lesser version of himself in his prime, Ferrer on his farewell tour has had some very impressive victories, notably against Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open and in the second round here (in Barcelona), where he routed Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

Ferrer has looked to leave the game with impact and has not been an easy opponent at tournaments in 2019. Playing in front of his home fans, and on his favored surface at Barcelona, Ferrer will be inspired to push Nadal to earn the victory.

Nadal v Ferrer Predictions & Tips

The match-up is definitely heavily skewed in favor of Nadal, given his superior skills on clay, compared to all others. But, Ferrer is no newcomer to the clay either and has been playing extremely freely with passion and aggression since he has announced his retirement. Nadal on the other hand is yet to hit his peak on the clay this season.

Expect Ferrer to give what could potentially be the last time both meet on clay one final push, but Nadal will still be too strong and he should win in two well fought sets.
