Johanna Konta v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

These two players have faced off three times before this at the highest level and the 47th-ranked Konta has a 2-1 lead over her 43rd-ranked opponent. Interestingly, all these three matches have taken place over the last 16 months beginning with the Brisbane International last year and they played each other yet again this year in the same tournament – sharing the spoils. It was at the Australian Open that Konta went ahead with a hard-fought, three-set win in the first round.

Konta Inching Towards First Clay Final

The Brit has had a horrid run on clay before this and not too many expected her to come this far. After all, in the 19 matches she’d played on dirt over the past three years before the start of this clay-court swing, Konta had won just seven. Not a record she would have particularly enjoyed looking at.

Which is why, winning three matches in a row to reach her first ever clay-court WTA semi-final is an achievement on its own. Especially when those wins have been a grind, each one of them over Wang Yafan, Ana Bogdan and Su-Wei Hsieh going into three sets.

Now, Konta will be gunning for her first ever title-decider on this surface and it is against a player she has beaten in the past. The surface was different but the fight will remain the same because Konta’s recent run of form – she is on a five-match unbeaten streak – should give her a lot of confidence going into this one.

Tomljanovic in Second Semi-Final in a Row

Australia’s Tomljanovic might not relish clay so much but she definitely has a better record on it when compared with Konta. Over the past two years, she is 11-12 on clay, and this year she has already made the third round at Charleston while losing in her opener at Istanbul.

And yet, with two comfortable wins out of three matches here, she stands a better chance of winning on clay than her opponent. After all, Tomljanovic was the losing finalist last year here at Rabat and knows what it takes to go the distance – what she now needs to do is to keep her wits about her.

The Aussie won her opening three rounds against Fiona Ferro, Timea Bacsinszky and Rebecca Peterson, with only a sudden loss of form in her second round match losing her the second set of that encounter. She will hold the edge in this one.

Konta v Tomljanovic Predictions & Tips

There isn’t much to choose between the two players with bookmakers putting the Aussie just ahead at 4/5 as opposed to 888Sport’s offer of 21/20 for a Konta win. We expect a fighting match that goes right down to the wire and for the Aussie to win in three sets.

Tip: Tomljanovic to win in three sets: 17/5 (888Sport)
