However, Murray has effectively ruled himself out of playing singles this year while trying to focus on doubles for now.

In an interview with The Times, Murray said he did not have enough time to prepare himself for the singles competition in Wimbledon but the doubles tournament participation was definitely on.

Murray also cited the example of Bob Bryan and his return to doubles following his hip injury, and how he has come about well.

He said:

“I know from seeing what Bob Bryan has done that for doubles it will be absolutely fine. I’ll need to see from there how it would work singles-wise.”

“If I continue to feel good then I will obviously give it a shot in singles and see what happens. In doubles I’m pretty certain I’ll be able to play, just based on having an example to look at.

“The thing I said before was that, if I wasn’t feeling good, there was more chance that I would play and then stop after Wimbledon. Whereas if it’s feeling good, it makes a bit more sense to give it time to make sure that it’s as good as possible before I try to play singles on it.”

Even if Andy does feature in the doubles competition at Wimbledon, it might not be with his brother Jamie, who had earlier said it would be difficult to play with him give he hasn’t hit a ball on the court for a few months now.

Murray could also be awarded a wild-card by the tournament organisers at Queen’s Club, with the Scottish player expected to tell them about his potential participation closer to the start of the tournament. They have also said they will reserve wild-cards for Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

Meanwhile Murray had a hit-out with an unusual partner, with Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios stopping over at London to meet the Briton. Kyrgios and Murray had a hit at Wimbledon and the Aussie later said the clay court tournaments in the lead-up to Wimbledon should be cancelled.

He went on to say clay should be scrapped as a surface and that grass is the best surface to play tennis on.
