Daniil Medvedev v Dominic Thiem Preview & Tips:
It’s a match between the French Open finalist and clay court specialist Dominic Thiem and rising Russian eighth seed Daniil Medvedev. Surprisingly, Medvedev is the bookmakers’ favourite, marginally ahead at 8/11 to 7/5 for a Thiem win but what they might not have considered is the slightly slower nature of the surfaces in Montreal. That should give the Austrian a better shot at it, especially given Thiem leads 2-0 on overall head to head against Medvedev.
Thiem, we reckon could win this one in three sets.
Karen Khachanov v Alexander Zverev Preview & Tips:
Alexander Zverev’s season hasn’t been the greatest he has delivered, and it has also seen an unceremonious resignation of Ivan Lendl as his coach – thanks mainly due to some, off-the-cuff remarks made by the German. This would be his chance to show the world Zverev has a lot more about him than just boast, and he does hold an advantage over Khachanov overall with a 2-1 head to head record.
However, Khachanov did beat him at the Paris Masters and given the two players’ form this season, we think Khachanov might repeat that again in a tough three-setter.
Rafael Nadal v Fabio Fognini Preview & Tips
This should be a straightforward win for the top-seeded Nadal, against a player who has shown a more consistent side to him. Fognini did win his first Masters title this year but can he bring his A game to the party on hard court surfaces against a player who, despite his obvious fondness for clay, has a record to envy on these courts as well. Nadal, the defending champion is yet to drop a set this tournament, and is 11-4 ahead on head to head against the Italian.
Those four wins for Fognini have come on clay though and we reckon that Nadal should win this in straight sets.
Monfils v Bautista-Agut Preview & Tips
Monfils leads 3-1 on head to head against Bautista-Agut but here’s the deal – the Spaniard’s brilliant form. He has already made the Wimbledon semi-final this year, beaten Novak Djokovic twice and looks quite the favourite to ensure a win. Monfils has fighting qualities and could push this to the third set as well but Bautista-Agut will scalp this one.
