Alexander Bublik v Altug Çelikbilek Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players, all of which came in 2016 on the Futures circuit. Bublik won the first two before Çelikbilek clinched the third.

It was a solid start to the season for Bublik, who defeated Matteo Berrettini and Jeremy Chardy to make it to the final of the Antalya Open in January. There he retired from that match against Alex de Minaur because of an injury which means he is still to open his account as far as ATP title wins is concerned.

Still, a runnerup award is the way to go for the 46th-ranked Kazakh who is looking to break into the top 30 for a while now. He could have done that with a deep run at the Great Ocean Road but fell in the second round to Stefano Travaglia and then lost another second round match in the Australian Open to Dusan Lajovic.

Bublik, who has gone beyond the second round at a Grand Slam just once before, will now kick-start this competition as the fourth seed, hoping to go the distance. With an opening round bye and a draw not consisting of any of the top players, Bublik will get another chance to go all the way for his maiden title triumph.

First up though, he needs to get past a Turkish player he had played a few years ago at a lower circuit.

Çelikbilek with a Rare Main Draw Win

Çelikbilek had earlier this season got himself a wild-card at the Antalya Open, the same tournament at which Bublik made the final. He overcame Kacper Zuk in the opening round before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second there, but it was a rare main draw win for the the Turk.

Later he participated in the Istanbul Challenger but the 302nd-ranked player was dumped in the first round, before he made the main draw here via the qualifiers route.

And then, as luck would have it, Çelikbilek was drawn to play 17-year-old Shintaro Mochizuki, a wildcard entrant but one ranked outside the top 600. Taking advantage of that, Çelikbilek came through 6-0, 6-4 in that match to win his second main draw encounter of the season – a very rare record for a player whose best ATP ranking has been 298th.

Bublik will prove to be bit of a bigger challenge.

Bublik v Çelikbilek Prediction and Tip

Bublik should cruise through in this encounter, winning in straight sets. Less than 21.5 games expected in this one.

Tip: Bublik to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
