Federico Coria v Francisco Cerúndolo Head to Head

There have been three matches played between them on the Futures and Challenger circuit. Coria won the first two, in 2016 and 2019 while Cerúndolo came back to pull one back by winning 7-5, 7-5 at the 2020 Lima Challenger. All three matches were played on clay.

Coria Improving Each Season

It was in 2018 that Coria had hit a season-low ranking of 408th in the world before settling in at 279th by the time the year ended. A much improved showing in 2019 helped him jump up to 120th, and despite the lack of tennis through most part of the season in 2020, the Argentine broke into the top 100.

Currently, Coria is 95th in the world, and gunning to go some distance at the ATP level competitions to break out of his career-best ranking of 86th.

That breakthrough, top-100 ranking meant he didn’t have to go through the rigours of qualifying for the Australian Open, and a direct entry into the Murray River Open also helped. At the latter he made it to the second round, surprising Radu Albot, while at the year’s first major, he went down to the in-form Milos Raonic.

A quarterfinal appearance at the Concepcion Challenger just prior to this would have helped Coria get some momentum going and he would have been particularly pleased by the way he routed Dominik Koepfer in the first round here.

Cerúndolo Showing Momentum

He is 22 years old and ranked at his career-best of 135th in the world, and Cerúndolo can thank his consistent form last year and a Challenger finals appearance this year for that.

Cerúndolo comes into this tournament having played in the Concepcion Challenger which Coria was also a part of, and almost nearly won the title as well. In the final, Cerúndolo was a favourite to add to his list of Challenger titles, but was edged out in a third set tie-breaker by Sebastian Baez.

Earlier this year, Cerúndolo withdrew from the Australian Open qualifiers, second round, because of a fitness trouble.

With the kind of form he brings to this tournament – Cerúndolo was 36-11 on the Challengers and Futures circuit in 2020 – he will back himself to have a chance of getting past his higher-ranked opponent.

Coria v Cerúndolo Prediction and Tip

It’s interesting to note that despite both players being clay court specialists and Coria nearly 40 ranks ahead, it’s Cerúndolo who starts off a favourite at 8/11. Backing a three-setter thriller here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
