Kovalík Pivots from Challengers
After getting knocked out of the Australian Open qualifiers in the very first round, Kovalik opted to participate on the Challenger circuit over the past one month. He did well in Istanbul, getting to the semifinal of that tournament, before losing in the first round of the Antalya Challenger on clay.
Continuing to play in that very city for the next Challenger competition the following week, Kovalik carved out a couple of wins before going down in the quarterfinal to give him bit of a mixed bag of results.
His best result of the season seems to have come in the first round here, when going in at 11/10 against Daniel Elahi Galan, Kovalik registered a three-set win over his opponent to make it to the second round. This was his first main draw win on the tour since having made it to the second round at the Buenos Aires Open last year in February – which incidentally was his only victory at that level in 2020.
