Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera v Jozef Kovalík Head to Head
There have been no previous matches between Kovalík and Barrios Vera before this.
Barrios Vera Benefits from Pella Withdrawal
The withdrawal of the fourth seeded Guido Pella meant a slot in the second round bracket became empty, since the Argentine had a bye and it was Barrios Vera who replaced him directly in the second round.
And while Barrios Vera can count himself lucky to have made it to the second round as a 265th-ranked player with a career-best ranking of 254, he has definitely earned his way into the main draw of this event. Going up against three qualifiers pre-tournament, Barrios Vera won all the matches in straight sets to make it to the opener, having never even made it to the final on the Challenger circuit.
Barrios Vera now faces a huge challenge and will be a second favourite going into this encounter but the reward for winning this encounter is a maiden quarterfinal place in an ATP tournament.
Kovalík Pivots from Challengers
After getting knocked out of the Australian Open qualifiers in the very first round, Kovalik opted to participate on the Challenger circuit over the past one month. He did well in Istanbul, getting to the semifinal of that tournament, before losing in the first round of the Antalya Challenger on clay.
Continuing to play in that very city for the next Challenger competition the following week, Kovalik carved out a couple of wins before going down in the quarterfinal to give him bit of a mixed bag of results.
His best result of the season seems to have come in the first round here, when going in at 11/10 against Daniel Elahi Galan, Kovalik registered a three-set win over his opponent to make it to the second round. This was his first main draw win on the tour since having made it to the second round at the Buenos Aires Open last year in February – which incidentally was his only victory at that level in 2020.
Barrios Vera v Kovalík Prediction and Tip
While Kovalik is 1/2 to win this, we think Barrios Vera will provide a keen tussle and could push his opponent into a third.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
