Benoit Paire v Federico Coria Head to Head

The 29th-ranked Paire and the 95th-ranked Coria have faced off once before this and that match had come in the French Open held late last year. Coria had come away a winner in four sets in that encounter.

Paire Finally Wins One

It was the Auckland Open last year and Paire’s career looked to be headed in the right direction. He had made it to the final there and stretched fellow countryman Ugo Humbert to a third set tie-breaker before coming away with the runnerup trophy.

A second round loss in Australian Open would have hurt and another couple of second round defeats in Marseille and Dubai would have added to his frustration but that wouldn’t hold a candle to what was to follow. Post the resumption of tennis in August, Paire featured in six tournaments last season and won just one match, struggling to come to grips with the Covid-19 illness that had earlier ruled him out of the US Open.

And Paire lookes to have taken that form into 2021 as well, losing both his matches in the ATP Cup, and crashing out of the Australian Open in the first round. It’s the change in the ranking system that has still allowed Paire to remain inside the top 30 but he would have known he needs to start notching up wins.

Which is why a 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of Nicholas Jarry in the second round here, following a first round bye, would go some way in restoring some of his self-belief. Can he continue that run though?

Coria in a Fighting Win

Having dispatched Dominik Koepfer in the first round of this tournament, Coria would have gone into his second round with enough confidence against a player like Francisco Cerundolo, who is ranked 135th in the world.

That said, we had expected it to be a tough match and that’s how it turned out to be, with Coria needing to overcome a one set deficit to defeat his opponent. After Cerundolo ran away with the first set, Coria responded with a double break of serve and led 4-1 in the second.

And while the Argentine was broken back one, he immediately returned the favour before serving out the set to level the match.

The third was the most hard-fought set, with Coria saving a break-point in the fourth and sixth game apiece and then breaking his opponent on the third break-point of the ninth game. He shut out Cerundolo in the following game to make it to the last eight.

Paire v Coria Prediction and Tip

Coria starts off a favourite here because of the form that Paire has shown but there have been signs of the Frenchman showing the sparkle from the past. We expect Paire to win at least a set in this one.

Tip: Paire to win a set – Yes: 8/13 (bet365)
