Bublik Closes In on Second Final of the Season

World No. 46 Alexander Bublik continued his impressive run at the Singapore Open as he powered past fifth seed Yoshihito Nishioka in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The 6’6” Kazakh served 15 aces and saved all nine of the break points he faced to oust the Japanese 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 14 minutes.

Friday’s victory followed an easy Round-of-16 win over Turkey’s Altug Celikbilek on Wednesday. Bublik, who received a first-round bye, had needed just 54 minutes to dispatch the Turk 6-2, 6-2.

On Saturday, the 23-year-old Kazakh will be featuring in second semifinal of the season having reached the final of the Antalya Open earlier this year.

After winning his first two rounds comfortably, Bublik defeated the top seed Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal and France’s Jeremy Chardy in the semifinal to reach his third tour final in the season-opener in Antalya.

However, a bid for a maiden title lasted only a few minutes as the Kazakh retired from the final against Australia’s Alex de Minaur after just two games due to an injury he sustained in the semifinal.

The win over Nishioka on Friday improved Bublik to 8-3 this year. The Kazakh had lost a bit of form in Australia, winning just one match each at the Adelaide International and the Australian Open and exiting both the tournaments in the second round.

Albot Knocks Out the Top Seed

Facing Bublik in the semifinal will be Moldova’s Radu Albot, who knocked out the top seed Adrian Mannarino of France in the quarterfinal on Friday to reach his first semifinal since August 2019.

Dominating the quarterfinal, the sixth seed needed just an hour and 35 minutes to knock out the Frenchman 6-3, 6-4.

Albot, who made history at Delray Beach two year ago, when he became the first Moldovan to win an ATP Tour title, would be relieved to have spent less time and energy on Friday after two three-setters in the previous rounds.

Having beaten Australia’s John-Patrick Smith 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 on Tuesday, Albot had to save three match points against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in a draining second round contest on Thursday. The 31-year-old edged past the German with a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win.

The World No. 76, who started the 2021 season with two defeats on the trot, got going at the Australian Open, knocking out 12th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round, and Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the next before going down to Norway’s Casper Ruud in the Round of 32.

The Moldovan right-hander who reached a career-high ranking of 39 in 2019, began the 2020 season with 11 consecutive losses in all competitions. He ended the streak in the first qualifying round in Hamburg when he defeated Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero.

The resurgent Moldovan improved in the later half of the year, finishing with a 7-12 Tour record, which included last eight finishes in Cologne and Sofia.

Bublik v Albot Prediction and Tip

This promises to be a cracking contest between two players in top form. There will be little to choose between the two. Expect a third set to separate the two.
