Ramos-Vinolas Hopes to Carry Cordoba Form

At the time of writing, Ramos-Vinolas has already won his first four rounds at the Cordoba Open and made it to the final, where he will be gunning for his third ATP title. And irrespective of whether he wins that or not, it has been a brilliant showing from the Spaniard who had come into the tournament with an ordinary start to the season.

Having won just one of the three matches he played across the two tournaments in Melbourne, the 33-year-old Ramos-Vinolas would be particularly proud of his fitness. After all, all of his wins have been three-setters, including one in the quarterfinals against the tournament favourite Diego Schwartzman and following that against another Argentine Facundo Bagnis.

This is the same Ramos-Vinolas, who in 2020, struggled on clay in the second half of the season, winning just two out of his seven matches which included five opening round defeats.

Now, he looks to have turned things around by reaching his first ATP final since July 2019 (incidentally he made it to successive finals that month, winning one of them), and facing a talented but 400-odd-ranked player should give him the confidence of making it through to the next stage here as well.

Rune on ATP Debut

Danish 17-year-old Rune is on his ATP debut, having received a wild-card to make it to the main draw. And that comes on the back of some solid performances at the Futures circuit level, where he has made it to seven tournament finals between September 2020 and February 2021, winning four of them.

A former junior French Open singles champion, Rune has been a part of the Mouratoglou Academy which adds to the interest surrounding this lad.

What only adds to the interest is the rollicking rise in Rune’s ATP rankings over the past 12 months or so. He was outside the top 1000 at the start of the 2020 season but has since broken into the top 500, and currently is at his career-best ranking of 405th in the world, following a 13-2 win-loss record on the Futures circuit this season.

Interestingly enough, Rune’s record on clay suggests he loves the surface – he was 34-11 on it last year – but add the 13-2 on hard courts this year you would have to believe his game can adapt to different surfaces even at this young age.

Can he make his ATP debut count?

Ramos-Vinolas v Rune Prediction and Tip

Will Ramos-Vinolas have any difficulty in getting past Rune is the question? On paper, form is on his side but the issue he could face is the exhaustion from having played so many three-setters. The younger legs of Rune might have that bit of an advantage.

Tip: Rune to win a set – Yes: 1/1 (bet365)
