Karolina Pliskova v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

The World No. 55 Sevastova has a 2-1 lead against the World No. 6 Pliskova.

The Latvian won in Moscow in 2015 and in Madrid in 2017, both in straight sets, while the Czech fought back from a set down to win in Nottingham in 2016.

Pliskova Not Off To A Great Start

The 16-time WTA winner, Karolina Pliskova has had quiet start to 2021.

The World No. 6, who won in Brisbane and finished runner-up at the Italian Open in 2020, has made early exits from all the four tournaments she has featured in this year.

Starting in Abu Dhabi, the 28-year-old right-hander defeated Greece’s Despina Papmichael in the first round but fell to Russia’s Anastasia Gasanova in the next round.

She began her Australian Open preparations by powering past Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her first match at the Yarra Valley Classic, but was stopped in the Round of 16 by Danielle Collins, who won in straight sets after both of those went to tie-breaks.

At the Australian Open, the 2019 semifinalist seemed to have found her rhythm as she breezed past Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and Collins in the first two rounds, but had a massive meltdown in the third round, bowing out to compatriot Karolina Muchova 7-5, 7-5, despite having taken a 0-5 lead in the second. Pliskova looked frustrated and smashed her racquet a couple of times in the match before exiting the first major of the year.

In her next event, at the Qatar Open, Pliskova, who got a first-round bye, edged out Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16, but was outplayed by Jessica Pegula in the last eight.

A 29-time WTA finalist, Pliskova reached the final in Dubai in 2015, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep. The 2016 U.S. Open finalist will be aiming for better returns in Dubai as she begins her campaign on Tuesday.

Sevastova Finally Gets Going in Doha

Facing Pliskova in the Round of 32 will be Latvia’s former World No. 11 Anastasija Sevastova, who began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 walloping of American Bernarda Pera in the first round on Sunday.

The Latvian won 60% of the total points in the match, and converted six of 11 break points to close out the match in 69 minutes.

The 30-year-old Sevastova, who has won four WTA titles, with the most recent of them coming at home in Jurmala in 2019, is 3-5 this year.

She didn’t have a great start to the season making a first round exit in the season-opener in Abu Dhabi.

At the Yarra River Classic, Sevastova registered her first win of 2021, beating American Madison Brengle, but was overpowered by Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round.

The 2018 U.S. Open semifinalist had a disappointing Australian Open, where she could win just four games in her first-round defeat to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

Her dismal run continued at the Phillip Island Trophy, where she squandered a one-set advantage to lose her first round contest to Romania’s Ana Bogdan.

The Latvian, who was in woeful form last year as well, winning just two of her 12 matches, finally managed to win two matches in a row at the Doha Open last week, beating France’s Caroline Garcia and American Christina McHale in the first two rounds, before going down fighting against Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann in a thrilling three-set quarterfinal. The Swiss won 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-5.

Sevastova will be taking a lot of confidence from that run in Qatar and her first-round win against Pera and hope to carry that momentum in Dubai.

Pliskova v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

Given Pliskova’s dodgy start to the season and Sevastova’s recent run in Doha, expect this to be a close contest. The Czech definitely will be the favourite to win, but she will have to be ready for a tough fight from the Latvian.

Tip: Pliskova to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
