Elise Mertens v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these two players in their careers and surprisingly, Cirstea has won both times. The first time they met was in the qualifiers of the 2016 French Open while their second meeting was in 2018 in Doha where the Romanian again registered a straight-set victory.

Mertens Demolishes Kudermetova

While Mertens was a favourite going into her semifinal against Veronika Kudermetova, the latter’s results all season has been indicative of a turning of a corner. Which is also why one expected the Russian to come up with a strong showing against the world number 17.

But here’s the deal about Mertens. Even last season, while returning from the pandemic, Mertens had made a poor start at the Palermo Open as she lost in first round there. This was, however, followed by a solid set of showings, including a final at the Prague Open, and a quarterfinal in Rome.

She has done something similar this year too.

Mertens was shocked by Alize Cornet in the Charleston Open opener two weeks ago but has followed things up here with a final appearance, having reached there with a 6-1, 6-4 drubbing of her Russian opponent.

What is interesting to note is Mertens lost that final at Prague to Romania’s Simona Halep. She now faces another Romanian and will be hoping for a different result, hoping for a second WTA title.

Cirstea Yet to Drop a Set This Clay Swing

She has played in four matches in this tournament, and won all four of them in straight sets to reach her first WTA final since September 2019.

And if Cirstea wins this, it would be only her second WTA title, which is saying something about her performances given the Romanian has been around since 2004 and seen a highest ranking of 21st in the world.

Cirstea kick-started her campaign here with a win over Kristina Kozlova before overcome Anastasia Potapova in the second. This was followed by Cirstea going into her quarterfinal against Fiona Ferro at 9/5 odds and coming through after her opponent retired from the encounter, before sealing off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Marta Kostyuk in semifinal.

So while overcoming Mertens won’t be an easy task given she would be up against a player who has a 17-4 win-loss record this season, Cirstea will hope to use her previous record against the Dutchwoman and her own good form this tournament to stall her opponent.

Mertens v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Mertens is a whopping 2/9 to win this which we believe are very short odds for her win which also opens up the chances for the games market for us. A fighting Mertens win is what we are expecting out of this.

Tip: Mertens to win AND Over 19.5 games in the match: 11/8 (bet365)
