Leylah Fernandez v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

This will be the first ever meeting between Fernandez and Tomova in a competitive setting.

Fernandez Pulls Past Polona

Fernandez had seen her form disappear all of a sudden after having managed to lift her maiden WTA trophy earlier this year at Monterrey. Playing on the hard courts there, Fernandez had won the tournament without dropping a set.

A qualifying defeat in Miami was probably an aberration but things haven’t gone too well for Fernandez since shifting to clay either.

A second round loss in Charleston was followed by back to back defeats in the first qualifying rounds in both, Madrid and Rome, and while clay isn’t quite her favourite surface, the 18-year-old would have liked to do better,

Which is also why a straight-set win over Polona Hercog, with Fernandez winning 7-5, 6-1, will calm things down a tad for her going into the French Open. Can she now emulate her French Open showing from the last season where she had won back to back matches on clay the last time?

Tomova Continues Improving Form

Starting the season ranked 146th, Tomova has already risen 23 spots which is quite something given the tweaked ranking system was making it difficult for the rankings to turn dramatically. And that has been down to her consistency this entire season.

While playing on the ITF circuit she has made a quarterfinal and a second round, and on the WTA tour, she has been a regular winner in the qualifiers to make the main draws.

Her best performance, however, came in Bogota where Tomova made the semifinal, helping her propel forward.

Here in Belgrade, Tomova might have gotten lucky too. She was knocked out in the second qualifying round by Ana Konjuh only to qualify as a lucky loser where she was drawn to face the unranked Lola Radivojevic.

Tomova came through in straight sets to make it to the second round here.

Fernandez v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Fernandez is 3/10 to win this but her clay court form coupled with Tomova’s consistency could make for an interesting viewing. Backing the latter to win a set.
