Kalinskaya Knocks Out the Sixth Seed

Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya knocked out the sixth seed Kristina Mladenovic of France in the first round of the Serbia Open on Tuesday.

The 111th-ranked Kalinskaya needed an hour and 42 minutes to defeat the World No. 59, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). Both players had 13 break point opportunities in the match with the Russian converting eight of them, while her opponent capitalising on just five of those opportunities.

The 22-year-old Kalinskaya, who made it to the second round of the U.S. Open in 2019 and 2020, has been in decent touch this year. Her biggest accomplishment so far in 2021 has been a maiden third round appearance at the Miami Open. Kalinskaya defeated Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round and Petra Martic in the second before going down fighting to Garbine Muguruza in three in the Round of 32.

Kalinskaya was also impressive in Monterrey, where playing as a qualifier she defeated second seed Nadia Podoroska of Argentina in the first round of the tournament and followed it up with a Round of 16 win against Nina Stojanovic of Serbia. She missed out on a spot in the semifinal after being beaten by eventual finalist Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland in the quarterfinal.

The Russian is one win away from reaching a second WTA quarterfinal this year.

A seven-time champion on the ITF Circuit, Kalinskaya has reached three doubles finals with Viktoria Kuzmova on the tour, winning the title in Prague in 2019.

Jani Wins First Main Draw Match in 2021

Meeting Kalinskaya in the Round of 16 will be Hungary’s Reka Luca Jani, who upset Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova in the first round on Tuesday.

Jani, playing her first WTA main draw match of the season, needed two hours and three minutes to beat the World No. 94, 6-2, 0-6, 7-5.

A winner of 22 singles and 32 doubles titles at the ITF Circuit, Jani had qualified for the main draw in Belgrade with wins over Serbia’s Aleksander Krunic in the first qualifier and Romania’s Jaquiline Cristian in the second qualifier. Both those matches went the distance, with the Hungarian holding her nerves to advance.

Ranked 220th in the world, the 29-year-old Jani has a career-high ranking of 147. It will be interesting to see if she can knock out another higher ranked player on Wednesday.
