Paula Badosa v Viktoriya Tomova Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23-yearold Spaniard and the Bulgarian, who is three years older.

Badosa’s Purple Patch Continues

23-year old Badosa is arguably in the form of her life, after reaching the semi-finals in Charleston, where she beat the world number one, Ashleigh Barty, and then again in Madrid, Barty getting her revenge on that occasion.

Now, as the only player in  the top 100 left in the tournament, she will feel she will never have a better chance of claiming her maiden senior WTA title.

Certainly, she has not been seriously challenged in Belgrade so far this week, beating first the veteran Andrea Petkovic of Germany and then Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania, both in straight sets.

In the quarter-final, she met the Swede Rebecca Peterson, and yet, again, she won comfortably, taking early control of the match by breaking Peterson in the opening game,  and then underpinning that with a second break, in a first set that lasted barely half an hour.

Badosa broke the Swede again in the opening game of the second set and that proved to be enough. Peterson barely threatened the Spaniard on her own serve and, it was ultimately a very comfortable win.

Lucky Loser Tomova Rides Her Luck to the Semi-Final

Tomova was actually beaten in the second round of qualifying by Ana Konjuh of Croatia, who has gone on to make the other semi-final, and only got her chance in the main draw as a lucky loser.

However, she has taken full advantage of the hand that has been dealt her, helped in the earlier rounds by two favourable draws.

She began with a  match against the 16-year old Serbian wildcard Lola Radivojevic, winning easily in straight sets, before meeting the Hungarian world 220, Roka Luca Jani,

Tomova romped through the first set for the loss of just one game, but Jani hit back to level, and the third set could have gone either way, before Tomova was finally able to get over the line.

There was not fortunate about her win over the up and coming Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandes in their quarter-final on Friday however, especially the way in which Tomova having won the first set, was able to regroup after Fernandez hit back to level the match.

Saving three break points in the course of her opening service game of the third set, the Bulgarian then broke Fernandez, and, although she immediately lost her own serve, broke the Canadian once more.

Two games later she broke the teenager again and, although she surrendered one of the breaks she had in hand, wrapped up proceedings with yet another break, this time to love.
