Jessica Pegula v Arantxa Rus Head to Head

This will be their first official meeting at tour level. However, Pegula and Rus have met twice before this. The American won a qualifying match for the Miami Masters in 2019, and Rus won the pair’s first meeting in an ITF event in Marseille in 2013.

Pegula Maintains Her Standing on Clay

Jessica Pegula continues to solidify her status as an all-around player. There is always this theory that American players tend to struggle to play their best tennis on clay owing to their penchant for hardcourts.

However, Pegula’s form this year has been terrific such that she has found little niggles in transitioning to clay. She made the Round of 16 in Madrid where she was stopped by the eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka.

She took it up to a whole different level in Rome on her debut appearance. She beat Daria Kasatkina and Naomi Osaka in straight sets (matches the American was long odds to win), en route to the quarterfinals – her best result on clay by some distance.

Five of Pegula’s 21 match wins this year have come against top 10 players and if she maintains this consistent run of form, she could be darkhorse at Roland Garros.

Rus Finished Runner-up in La Bisbal ITF

Pegula’s opponent Arantxa Rus has found little success on the main tour, winning just three matches since the start of the season. And it came as no surprise when the Dutchwoman alternated her schedule and appeared at two ITF events prior to Strasbourg.

Rus almost bulldozes her way past the chasing pack at that level. She won a staggering 10 titles on the ITF circuit in 2019 but has not been able to return to the winner’s corridor since.

Last weekend she came very close to end her two-year drought at the La Bisbal ITF where she did not drop a set in beating the like of Cagla Buyukakcay, Natalija Kostic, and Tereza Mrdeza en route to the final. However, she fell to World No. 330 Irina Khromacheva in a dramatic fashion.

Rus failed to serve out for the match in the third set, and squandered a match point in the tiebreak, as her title drought continues.

Pegula v Rus Prediction and Tip

Pegula has been lethal in dismissing her challengers this season. Rus is coming off a confidence-boosting run at the ITF in Spain, but her level of competition was nowhere near the American. Expect Pegula to advance in emphatic fashion.

Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
