Andreescu In First Clay Court Match of 2021

It’s been quite an up and down career for Andreescu so far, with the downs more related to fitness issues than performances on court.

Because after coming back from missing the entirety of the 2020 season, Andreescu has managed to play only three tournaments this year and yet done well at two of them.

At the first at the Phillip Island Trophy, she made it to the semifinal but then stormed into the final of the Miami Open soon after. She lost to Ash Barty in the final there but not before the Canadian had crashed into the parties of Amanda Anisimova, Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sakkari in the previous rounds.

Clay hasn’t typically been Andreescus favourite surface with the world number seven having played in only three WTA competitions on it – and just one in the main draw. That was at the French Open in 2019 where she won the opening round but had to withdraw from the second round.

Can she double her clay court tally count here?

Lazaro Garcia Has a Career-Best of 271st

In what will be Lazaro Garcia first ever main draw appearance of the season, the Spaniard will have a difficult opening round opponent to contend with. Unfortunately for her, the Spaniard’s form hasn’t been the best even at the ITF circuit, with just one quarterfinal appearance there.

At this tournament in Strasbourg, Lazaro Garcia made it through to the main draw with back to back qualifying wins against players ranked even lower than her.

Interestingly, Lazaro Garcia’s five ITF titles have been distributed evenly – two on clay including the most recent one in 2019 and three on hard court surfaces. Even this season, she has had a 5-6 win-loss on clay and 4-4 on hard court surfaces.

While expecting her to take down Andreescu would be expecting a lot, she could look to prove to be a tough nut to crack given her opponent’s return to clay court tennis in nearly two years.

Andreescu v Lazaro Garcia Prediction and Tip

An easy win for Andreeescu is what one can expect but the one aspect to look at is her rustiness. Can Lazaro Garcia push this match into a gruelling two-set encounter or even a three-setter?
