Munar Will Look to Recapture Marbella Form

Spain’s Jaume Munar comes to Parma on the back of three-match losing streak in the main draws, however, the clay court specialist is 7-7 on clay this year and reached his first career final in Marbella last month.

Ranked No. 80 in the world, Munar, who hasn’t played on hard courts this year, started the season by winning the Antalya-1 Challenger on clay and finishing runner-up in Antalya-2 also on the same surface.

He played his first match on the tour at the Cordoba Open but lost to Nicolas Jarry in a three-set first-round contest.

Munar found form in Buenos Aires, entering the main draw by winning all three of his qualifiers and continued his streak as he defeated Facundo Diaz Acosta and Frances Tiafoe in the first two rounds. His run finally came to an end in the quarterfinals after he was sent packing by Diego Schwartzman.

The Spaniard’s South American clay season ended with a defeat to Federico Delbonis in Chile.

In Europe, Munar began the season by finishing runner-up at the Marbella Challenger and then repeated the feat at the ATP 250 in Marbella for his first ever final on the tour.

Beginning with a first round win against Henri Laaksonen, the 24-year-old right-hander knocked out the second seed Fabio Fognini in the Round of 16, Ilya Ivashka in the quartefinals and Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals before falling to top seed Pablo Carreno Busta in a three-set final.

Since that run in Andalusia, Munar has lost a bit of momentum. He did reach the second round in Barcelona, where he was outplayed by Stefanos Tsitsipas. Following the Barcelona exit, Munar lost in the first rounds in Estoril (where he was a qualifier) and Madrid and the first qualifying round in Rome.

Ymer Yet to Make a Mark on Clay

Facing Munar in the first round will be Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, who qualified for the main draw by beating Italy’s Matteo Viola in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Swede saved 5 of 8 break points and converted in 6 of 11 to win the one hour and 49 minutes contest 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Ranked 103rd in the world, Ymer had beaten Argentina’s Facundo Mena in the first qualifying round on Saturday. This will be the Swede’s second main draw appearance on clay this year. Last week, he qualified for Lyon, before going down fighting to Arthur Rinderknech in the Round of 32.

The 2015 boys’ singles runner-up at Wimbledon, Ymer has a career high ranking of 67. He had a pretty decent showing on hard courts earlier this year, making his first Round of 32 appearances at a Grand Slam and a Masters event.

At the Australian Open, Ymer, who is 4-5 this year, stunned Hubert Hurkacz in five and defeated Carlos Alacaraz in four to reach his first third round at a major. But his run was ended by Stefanos Tsitsipas, who scored a straight sets win.

Ymer was equally good at the Miami Masters, winning his first two rounds against Alejandro Tabilo and Nikoloz Basilashvili, but he was stopped in the third round by Emil Ruusuvuori despite winning the first set.

Overall the Swede has 5-10 record on clay and will be hoping to turn things around in Parma.
