Stojanovic Enters as a Nottingham Semifinalist

For someone whose only previous match on grass had come in the 2017 Wimbledon qualifiers – and needless to say she lost it – Stojanovic came into the Nottingham Open last week as a rank outside to win even one round.

That she defeated Oceane Dodin, Donna Vekic and Tereza Martincova to reach the semifinal before going down in a hard-fought three-setter against Johanna Konta, the eventual winner, came out as a huge surprise.

It was also a result that helped her climb a couple of spots on the WTA charts, moving to 85th in the world as opposed to her career-best which was just four places ahead of that.

Interestingly, Stojanovic hadn’t entered the grass swing with a lot of form under her belt either.

She was on a three-match losing streak, and her last main draw victory had come in Miami in the second round. Before that, she had been 4-5 on win-loss all season.

Can she continue to astound her opponents and fans alike on grass?

Potapova 7-9 This Season

Potapova’s career-best ranking of 64th in the world came last season but since then her form has fallen away and so has her ranking. She is now 82nd on the WTA charts and that’s despite the tweaked ranking system preventing any major swings in player ranking till very recently.

Because barring a third round appearance at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal showing in Dubai, Potapova hasn’t done much of note in her singles play in 2021.

More recently on clay, Potapova’s struggles have increased even more.

The Russian lost in the first and second rounds at Charleston and Istanbul respectively, while failing to qualify in Madrid and Rome. And when she picked up just three games in her opening defeat at French Open it did look like something wasn’t right.

Potapova will now hope she can turn things around on grass, a surface on which she has won just one match in her career.

Stojanovic v Potapova Prediction and Tip
