Coco Vandeweghe v Marie Bouzkova Head to Head

The American holds a 1-0 lead over Bouzkova, beating her the one and only time in the 2019 WTA San Jose.

Vandeweghe Roaring with Confidence

Coco Vandeweghe’s performance in Birmingham over the last week has been truly reminiscent of her glory days when she was a top 20 player. In the second round, she overcame the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in a classic comeback win with 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. That victory came after a straight-set win over Kristyna Pliskova in the opener.

The two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist has now delivered her best run this year, as well as her first such feat on the WTA Tour since a 125K Series event in 2020 January.

It has been a long road to recovery for Vandeweghe, who has had to battle a serious ankle injury and the subsequent rehab to keep on playing. Before her run in Birmingham, she never made it past the opening round in any tournament.

But then, if there was ever a time for her to stage a comeback on the tour, a grass tournament would be the way to go. After all, it is at SW19 where Vandeweghe had the most consistent run in a Grand Slam. Plus, the only two singles titles she has won so far in her career came in a grass event – Rosmalen Open, 2014 and 2016.

Bouzkova Finds her Stride in Birmingham

22-year-old Bouzkova had a brilliant start to her season but hasn’t been able to build on that momentum further. As the runner-up at the Phillip Island Trophy (where she beat Bianca Andreescu in the semis) and a semifinalist in WTA Guadalajara, she showed great promise.

However, the clay swing completely disrupted her form. Through WTA Charleston to French Open, she played in four tournaments but managed to pick up just one win. Things did not go according to the plan for her in the Nottingham Open last week either – she lost her opener there to Katie Boulter.

But here in Birmingham, Bouzkova has done well to find some of her rhythm back. The Czech started with a three-set win over Su-Wei Hsieh and next beat Carolina Garcia in a clinical fashion with 6-3, 6-0. But now, she faces an opponent who is not only seasoned on grass but is also hungry for a win.

Vandeweghe v Bouzkova Prediction and Tip

A run like this has been long overdue for Vandeweghe. Seeing her pedigree through the years on this surface, she is certainly starting as our favourite. Bouzkova’s chances of winning here are slim and she will need to bring her best foot forward to have a fighting chance.
