World no. 22 Angelique Kerber reached her first quarterfinal of the season with a tough three-set victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Wednesday.
The German, who had come into the tournament with a woeful 2-8 season record, seems to be slowly returning to her elements.
The 13-time tour-level champion had beaten France’s Diane Parry 6-3, 6-4 in the first round. She made a solid start in the second round as well, winning the first set with ease, but Sasnovich recovered in the second to take the match into the third.
It was neck and neck with in the decider with both players exchanging a break early, but Kerber got a decisive second break in the ninth game and then held her serve to beat the World No. 45, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
This is the first time since her quarterfinal finish in Indian Wells last year that she has made it to the last eight. Now she will look to reach her first semifinal since Cincinnati in 2021.

Linette Demolishes Another Opponent
Last year’s semifinalist Magda Linette has reached the quarterfinals this year with a straight sets thrashing of Heather Watson in the second round on Tuesday.
Linette struck 10 aces, won 100% of her points on the first serve, didn’t face a single break point, and converted 5 of 13 break points to beat Watson 6-1, 6-1.
The Polish player didn’t face a break point in her first round match either, as she overpowered Russia’s Varvara Gracheva 6-3, 6-0.
Linette, who was also a quarterfinalist in Charleston, this year, will be looking to upset the second seed on Thursday and advance to her first semifinal since the WTA 250 in Cleveland last year.
Kerber v Linette Prediction and Tip
Kerber is the second seed and there will be expectations from her to advance to the semifinals, but she will be wary of Linette’s form. Expect a close contest, with the German advancing.
