Playing in her first professional tournament in over two months, 36-year-old Kirsten Flipkens commenced her campaign in the Libema Open with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Anastasia Tikhonova. It wasn’t the most clinical of the wins by the Belgian as she won just 59 percent of the points behind the first serve, relying mostly on errors from her opponent’s end to win.
Playing under the protected ranking norm, the win is still a positive for the former world number 13. Up until now, she was defeated in the qualifiers/opening round matches.
Her last stint was in the Miami Open where she lost to Viktorija Golubic in three sets in the opener.
That said, Flipkens has some history in the Netherlands; she is a two-time finalist in the Rosmalen Open. She last reached the final in 2019, losing to Aleksandra Krunic in the trophy match. Perhaps, she can tap into that pedigree this week too?

Li, Roaring with Confidence
21-year-old Ann Li is keen on leaving her mark on the tour as she resumes consistent action after a long hiatus.
After her third-round exit in Miami at the hands of Alison Riske, she then played only in the French Open where she retired against Alison Van Uytvanck in the opener. Now, the young American in Den Bosch where she just knocked out the fifth-seed Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets.
Last year, Li enjoyed a breakthrough season with two WTA finals in Melbourne and Tenerife alongside a few other deep runs. These propelled her into the top 100 and she is now ranking World No. 68.
She is also untested on grass so it will be interesting to see how she fares in the coming weeks.
Li v Flipkens Prediction and Tip
This is a classic battle of generations; Li with all her agility and young blood will start as the favourite on paper. Plus, she will also be bolstered by her win over the rising Russian Samsonova. Flipkens, although experienced, is still rusty and may find herself in another demanding affair.
Ultimately, Li should come out on the top.
