A Solid Start for the Two Players
Pliskova and Brengle have started their Australian Open campaign with convincing victories.
The Czech took the stage at the Hisense Arena against her compatriot Karolina Muchova. Pliskova was absolutely brilliant in that match as she dispatched her opponent in straight sets with 6-3, 6-2, in just 70 minutes. She doled out 21 winners while keeping her first service win rate at 71%.
As for Madison, she defeated the Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi in an hour with 6-4, 6-0. While the score may tell a tale of the American’s brilliance, the statistics tell a different story. Brengle had only 7 winners in comparison to Doi’s 20.
However, she committed only 9 unforced errors as against the Japanese’ 37. Nonetheless, she got the job done and moved to the second round where a formidable opponent awaits her.
Pliskova’s Superior Form versus Brengle’s Mediocre Spell
The World No. 8 started her 2019 season at the Brisbane International – a Premier competition she won successfully to life her 12th singles title. On the other hand, Brengle participated in the Auckland Open and WTA Hobart and in both the cases, she was sent packing in the first round itself.
Furthermore, Pliskova stayed in the top 10 throughout 2018. She won the WTA Stuttgart, WTA Tokyo and was also a runner-up in the Tianjin Open.
The World No. 88, on the other hand, jumped between the ITF and WTA circuits. She experienced some success in the former, having won the ITF event in Landisville, Stockton, and Midland. However, on the WTA Tour, she couldn’t do much to get past the early rounds.
Pliskova v Brengle Head to Head
This is not going to be the first time that Madison Brengle is running into the Czech No. 2. The two players have met twice already and Pliskova, not so surprisingly, leads by 2-0. They last met in the second round of the Miami Masters where the seventh seed won 6-1, 6-3.
As for this fixture, Pliskova is all set to start as the favourite to win. She should be able to reach the third round comfortably, without losing a set.
