Ostapenko Finally Secures a Win

The 2017 French Open champion has finally won her first match of the 2019 WTA season. It was a much-needed win by the World No. 22, who lost in the first round in Shenzhen, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Her opening match in St. Petersburg was against the Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic with whom she traded bagels to win the match 6-1, 0-6, 6-0. The game lasted for an hour and 23 minutes and saw the Latvian win six out of seven break points while maintaining a first service win-rate of 67%.

Ostapenko started to struggle with her form right after the Wimbledon last year. After her stint at the SW 19 where she was a semifinalist, she failed to move past the early rounds in the subsequent tournaments. She finally ended her season in Hong Kong where she lost in the first round.

Pavlyuchenkova’s Sensational Run in Melbourne

The 27-year-old came to St. Petersburg on the back of a brilliant performance in the Australian Open. She made it all the way to the quarterfinal after edging past the likes of Kiki Bertens and Sloane Stephens. She ultimately succumbed to Danielle Collins in three sets but did enough to develop some momentum and form.

The World No. 32 started her campaign in this Russian city against Alize Cornet. In two hours, Pavlyuchenkova won in straight sets with 7-5, 7-6(4).

Considering her performance last season, she won the tournament in Strasbourg and later reached the quarterfinal in Wuhan and Moscow. She is not among the most consistent players but as shown in Melbourne, she is more than capable of delivering big wins.

Ostapenko v Pavlyuchenkova – Head to Head

The two players have met only once and that encounter took place in 2016 WTA Birmingham. Back then, it was Ostapenko who secured that win in straight sets.

Ostapenko v Pavlyuchenkova Predictions & Tips

Pavlyuchenkova is the local favourite and is coming in with quite a bit of momentum. She has been in good form of late and after her performance in the Australian Open, she possesses a definite threat to the other players. Additionally, Ostapenko only recently secured her first win of the season and she now faces a herculean task against her Russian adversary.

By the looks of it, Pavlyuchenkova should be able to win this one but Ostapenko is a strong player who is more than capable of winning here. This will be an evenly contested fixture that can very well go to three sets.
