Dominic Thiem v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head
There have been four matches played between these two players and Thiem leads the head to head 3-1. This was after Thiem had won three successive matches against the Argentine including twice on clay before Schwartzman managed to pull one back with a win at the 2017 Canadian Masters.
Thiem Looks to Continue Comeback
There will be a sense of relief for Thiem after his illnesses earlier in the year had caused a bit of a concern for those around him. For now, it looks like things are better and those problems are behind him as he registered a quarter-final win over Pablo Cuevas, winning a three-setter 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to make it to the last four.
This was after he had been a 6-4, 6-4 winner in his second round match against Maximilian Marterer following his opening round bye.
The Austrian is now 11-0 on win-loss record at this tournament, but he sure was tested in his match against Cuevas, stretched to three sets and now will be his first real test against the world number 17. A win here will not just silence the demons in his own mind but also remind others of his French Open final appearance last year, following the semi-finals in 2016 and 2017.
Home Support Should Help Schwartzman
After a first round bye, the Argentine world number 17 needed three sets to get into rhythm and overcome Aljaz Bedene in his second round win. However, once that happened, it needed him just two sets to overcome Albert Ramos to make it to the last four stage of this tournament.
Schwartzman has shown glimpses of what he can do but has not really been able to push it further. At the Sydney International, he made the semi-finals where he lost to Andreas Seppi, followed by a third round exit at the Australian Open, and quarter-finals in Cordoba.
This time around, there’s another semi-final entry but it’s on a different surface – clay. It’s probably his favourite surface but the issue is he is up against a player who does even better on clay.
