Paula Badosa v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

There has been only one previous meeting between these two and Kontaveit had beaten Badosa in Ostrava in 2021 to reach the quarterfinals.

Badosa Ranking Takes a Tumble

For a week in 2022 she was the number two player in the world and for many more weeks Badosa managed a third rank on the WTA charts. She was ranked fourth as recently as in October 2022 before the lack of performances caught up with her.

The Spaniard ended the year on the back of just two wins from nine matches spread across seven tournaments. With Badosa having not gotten any points for her Wimbledon 2022 performance either – she had made the fourth round there – it’s no surprise she enters the new season ranked 13th in the world.

And with Badosa having made the final of the Sydney International in the second week of the last season, an early defeat here could pull her rankings further down.

The good news is Badosa enters this competition on the back of a hard-fought win over Harriet Dart in the only singles match she played in the United Cup last week.

Kontaveit Sent Packing in Adelaide Opener

While Badosa represented Spain at the United Cup, Estonia’s non-qualification meant Kontaveit featured in the Adelaide International last week. And her stay in that tournament was a short one with Kontaveit losing in the very first round to Qinwen Zheng.

Kontaveit fell in three hard-fought sets to her Chinese opponent, ranked 11 spots behind her.

To be fair to Kontaveit, she looked like at her fighting best, coming back from 6-1, 4-2 down to level the match and even having a match-point in the final set. Zheng saved it and then completed the victory off her second such opportunity.

Interestingly, like Badosa, Kontaveit was also ranked second in the world last year but with results not coming her way, she fell out of the top 10 too.

Here’s her chance to climb back up the rankings ladder with a few tough wins.

Badosa v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

This is another difficult one to call but Kontaveit’s a slightly better hardcourt player and could hold that teeny-weeny edge here.
