Edmund, Looking to Rebuild after Injury
Edmund started the year in disappointing fashion, beaten in the first round in Brisbane, and then losing first time out in the Australian Open, a tournament where he had reached the semi-final the year before. That loss meant he lost a lot of world ranking points, and he slid further down the ATP list as he was forced to sit out the next few tournaments with injury.
However, in a bid to regain form and confidence, he chose to enter the preliminary to this tournament, the Indian Wells Challenger event last week, and went on to win it, comfortably beating Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the final. In the process he not only boosted his confidence but also got an early feel for the court and conditions he will be facing in the main tournament.
Jarry Searching for Form
Jarry has had a very poor 2019 so far. The world number 86 was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in Doha, and exited the Australian Open at the first round stage, like his opponent on Sunday.
He then suffered first round exists in his next three tournaments in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Acapulco, so arrived in Indian Wells low on form and confidence.
Despite this, the clay court specialist pulled off an impressive win in the first round, beating home favourite Frances Tiafoe on Saturday, winning 7-5 in the third set. That win will give him heart going into the meeting with Edmund.
