This will be the first time that the two ladies will face each other on the tour.
Halep Continues Her Winning Run
The Romanian started the tournament without a coach, once again, and so far has performed quite well. However, it is worth mentioning that her fixtures up until this point have been quite easy.
Halep started with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Barbora Strycova in the second round and followed it up with a 7-6(3), 7-5 win over Kateryna Kozlova in the third round.
The reigning French Open and Canadian Open champion has lost only four matches so far – a rather surprising result that can probably be chalked off to her decision to play without a coach for the first time in her career. Now that she is gradually getting used to it, Halep is certainly finding her rhythm once again.
She also had a good outcome in Doha when she briefly worked with Thierry Van Cleemput and reached the final. Halep followed the runner-up feat there with a quarter-final showing in WTA Dubai.

Vondrousova’s Impressive Showing in Indian Wells
Vondrousova, who is just 19-years-old right now, has so far been truly exceptional in Indian Wells. She started her campaign with a straight-set victory against Laura Siegemund and followed it with a brilliant 6-2, 6-1 win over the number 14 seed Daria Kasatkina.
She then moved on to knock out Jelena Ostapenko to reach the fourth round. The Czech is coming in strong after reaching the final in Budapest a couple of weeks ago, where she lost to Alison Van Uytvanck.
Vondrousova also had a similar run in the US Open last year, when she lost to Lesia Tsurenko in the fourth round. She was also a semifinalist in Gstaad.

Halep will no doubt start as the favourite here. However, a determined Vondrousova may pose problems for her and it will be interesting to see how the Romanian deals with it.
