Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal Head to Head

A rivalry that goes as far as 2004, Federer and Nadal have met each other a total of 38 times on the tour. Nadal presently leads Federer by 23-15.

However, their last five meetings since 2015 have been won by the Swiss. Four of those five matches were played on outdoor hard courts, including the fourth round of the 2017 Indian Wells, the final of the Miami Masters later that month and the final of the Shanghai Masters the same season.

Nadal’s First Major Showing Since the Australian Open

Nadal, who is currently the World No. 2, had a scintillating run in Melbourne when he made it to the final without dropping even a single set. He played with such finesse and ease that he was primed to go the distance in the same way.

However, his final match against Novak Djokovic was an entirely opposite story. Nadal lost to the Serbian in straight sets, in what was one of his most shocking performances. No matter what he tried, Djokovic seemed to have an answer and the Spaniard just couldn’t find a way to fight back.

Since then, he has only played in the Mexican Open where he lost in the second round to Nick Kyrgios.

However, in Indian Wells, he has been quite comfortable, moving past the likes of Jared Donaldson, Diego Schwartzman, and Filip Krajinovic in straight sets. In the quarters, he defeated Karen Khachanov 7-6(2), 7-6(2) to set up the Federer clash.

Nadal won five titles last year, including three masters and a Grand Slam. However, with the exception of the Canadian Open, all of those titles came on the clay surface.

Federer Looking to Build on His Dubai Run

Federer recently won his 100th ATP singles title in Dubai after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. It was a revenge of sorts for the Swiss, given that he lost to the young Greek in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

At the age of 37, Federer has still shown no signs of slowing down. While he may be limiting the number of tournaments he plays in, he has certainly been efficient on the rest of the tour. The World No. 4 is seeking his sixth Indian Wells Masters title and this is his fifth semifinal showing since 2014.

Throughout the tournament, he has had a run similar like Nadal’s. He has reached the semis without losing a set, defeating Peter Gojowczyk, Stan Wawrinka, Kyle Edmund, and Hubert Hurkacz.

Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal Predictions & Tips

This is one fixture that is too close to call, but Federer will start as the favourite here. His record in Indian Wells is better than Nadal’s. Furthermore, he has won their last five meetings in a display of sheer dedication and talent.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard’s tally on the hard surface hasn’t been that impressive although, he can still put up a good fight here. Whatever may be the outcome here, this is a cherished rivalry that fans are getting to witness in action for the first time since 2017.

Tip: Federer to win a set: 2/11 (bet365)
