Jakupovic Handed a Tricky Draw in Miami
The 27-year-old Slovenian arrived in Miami with a win-loss record of 3-6. Two of those three victories have come in the qualifier rounds of the preceding tournaments.
With six losses in, Jakupovic will be hoping for a revival here but it is quite unlikely, given that her first round opponent is Venus Williams. She made it to the main draw after winning in the qualifiers but lacks the necessary experience and momentum to go the distance.
In fact, up until WTA Dubai, she had never made it past the first round on the tour this year. The last time she had a decent run of any sorts was in the 2018 WTA Tashkent, where she reached the quarterfinal.
An Easy Start for Williams
Venus, who has won the Miami Open thrice in her career, was also a quarterfinalist in previous year’s edition.
She is heading into this tournament after a rather decent run in the Indian Wells last week, where she reached the quarterfinal. There, she defeated the likes of Petra Kvitova and Mona Barthel. That was also the second time this season that she had a run like that, with the other instance being the WTA Auckland.
Even though Williams hasn’t been in that great of a form as she was once before, she is still trying hard and pushing her opponents to the limit. The last time she reached the final on the WTA Tour was in 2017 when she was the runner-up in Wimbledon, WTA Finals, and the Australian Open.
