Marco Cecchinato v Guido Pella Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, both times on clay. Cecchinato won in the final in Umag, Croatia in 2016, and again in the semi-finals in Buenos Aires earlier this year.

Cecchinato Confident of Securing A Quarter-Final Berth

Cecchinato has no need to prove his clay court credentials. Semi-final at Roland Garros last year, the Italian has won three senior ATP titles on that surface in the past year alone – the Hungarian and Croatian Opens in 2018, and the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires in February. He is hungry for more.

So far things have gone much according to plan in Monte-Carlo this week. His first round opponent, Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia retired after losing the first four games, and, although former Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka took the first set off him to love in their second round encounter, Cecchinato was able to fight his way back and prevail in the end.

Playing somebody he has beaten twice, once as recently as two months ago, he will be highly confident of a quarter-final appearance at least.

Pella, A Conqueror of Cilic

Pella too has shown his form on clay this year, snapping a losing streak in finals by claiming his first senior ATP title in Brazil last month. And, with 11 clay court titles to his name on the junior tours, he will not be an easy opponent for the Italian.

He will have been boosted by his progress in Monte-Carlo as well. In the first round, he beat Laslo Dere of Serbia in three sets, and then, on Tuesday, achieved one of the best wins of his career, putting out the number seven seed, Marin Cilic of Croatia in straight sets.

Now while Cilic hasn’t been in the best of form this year, getting the better of a player of that quality would have given him the belief he belongs to this level.

Cecchinato v Pella Predictions & Tips

Cecchinato is the odds-on favourite for this match at 4/6, whilst Pella is priced at 7/5. Both men are in form and both enjoy playing on clay, but, given their head-to-head record, Cecchinato should just have too much for his opponent.

Tip: Cecchinato to win: 8/11 (William Hill)
