Daria Kasatkina v Marta Kostyuk Head to Head
Their only previous outing came at the 2020 US Open and Kostyuk had won that first round match in straight sets.

Tereza Mrdeza isn’t a household name and Kasatkina was coming into the tournament and her first round match against her without having played a single match on clay. Sure, Kasatkina has been the form player with two WTA titles under her belt all season already but her form this season had been restricted to hard court surfaces.
Which is why she would be glad to have come through against the unheralded opponent but more vitally done that in the manner in which she did.
Kasatkina needed an hour and six minutes to carve out a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mrdeza to come through and set up this second round meeting with Kostyuk. And what was interesting to watch was she broke her opponent seven times in the match, losing her own serve once to get Mrdeza on the board.
The Russian has shown exemplary form all season with title wins at the St. Petersburg Open and Phillip Island Trophy. And she has started off like she would like for the same form to continue on clay as well.

Kostyuk Gets Back to Winning Ways
The 18-year-old and 85th-ranked Kostyuk had begun well this season as she marched into the semifinal of the Abu Dhabi Open. She had won matches to get that far before losing to Veronika Kudermetova in the last four stage.
Kostyuk followed on that performance with an easy first round win at the Grampians Trophy but since then has stuttered and stumbled. She fell to Jennifer Brady at that tournament, and then lost back to back matches against Veronika Kudermetova and Tsvetana Pironkova to enter this tournament on a three-match losing streak.
Which is also why this first round win over Kamilla Rakhimova makes for as much a sense of confidence as it was about relief. Kostyuk came through in straight sets, beating Kamilla Rakhimova 6-4, 6-3 to seal a second round berth.
And she now takes on a difficult opponent who is coming through with a one-sided win under her belt.
